birthday!!

well yesterday was my daughter's 17th birthday, so this post is dedicated to her..

she is a lovely, smart, thoughtful, beautiful young woman.

though here is another way we are different, to me, a birthday is an opportunity to wear a crown all day, to have the wait staff at a restaurant sing to you.. and then maybe go to a second restaurant for a second dessert and be serenaded there also.

a birthday is a time to be a spoiled.. in fact i am constantly trying to figure out a way to extend my birthday to a birthweek!

my daughter just wanted a nice subdued day.. that's what she got.. but it took all my strength to not make a bigger deal out of it.

anyway...

all those who get to know her in her life will be richer for it.

just in case you think she is perfect, she isn't.. she has flaws...

the biggest of which is she hates sports!

ugh!

just my luck that i would have one child and she would despise sports of any kind ( unless you consider fashion and shopping as a sport.)

happy happy my sweet girl!!!

Perfect game!! What is your idea of a perfect game!

A shout out to Mark Buehrle of the white sox.. He did something that only 17 other MLB pitchers have done in history.

27 up and 27 down...

an honorable mention to DeWayne Wise who made the perfect catch ( kind of) to keep Buehrle's perfect game in tact in the 9th inning.

My perfect game might be sitting on the 40 yd. line in the first row behind the Jets bench as they win the superbowl.. or even more unbelievable, would be the gal ( i don't think there are any) who is holding one side of the first down marker during said Superbowl. Hey if i am going to dream, i might as well go all the way..

and yeah.. after the superbowl win, Joe Namath kisses me.. heh! He could even call me Suzy if he wanted to.

What is your idea of the Perfect Game?

MACCA!!! Sir Paul !!! WOW!

so i went to see Paul Mccartney at Citi Field on Tuesday, July 21st.

i have never seen him before...

all i can say is wow!

i arrived at the parking lot early. and was sitting in my car, and heard something that i thought was someone just blasting out Macca out of their car stereo, but when i got out of my car, i realized that he was doing a sound check in the stadium.

he did a couple of songs including one that he didn't play during the actual concert, Midnight Special!!! just wow! it sounded great!

his opening band was an Irish band called "the script" .. they had a very nice sound..

after they were done and 40 minutes later, Macca came on. i don't know what to say. Paul was brilliant . his voice is fabulous.

i have seen a lot of these aging stars, and their voices don't hold up, his does. i also love watching him play. they showed his finger work on the big screens. he still is one of the best bass players i have seen.

his band is awesome. the drummer is great, as are the guitarists. Paul really puts on a show. i didn't sit down for the entire concert. 2 hours and 45 minutes .. non stop hits..

when he said "See you next time" i thought i will be there! i could see him over and over. it was sooo worth the $$ and total exhaustion!!!

Yikes! .... a week later... Watson, McCartney, Monty Python...

So.. i did have computer issues for two days.. and couldnt have posted..

of course, it doesnt account for the other 5.

well i just have been lazy. Can you believe it?? a sports nut being lazy!

WELL, i never said i was an athlete.. i am a lazy sports nut..

Ok back to sports...

I like Stewart Cink..

BUT i was really rooting for Tom Watson. How cool was that.

Unfortunately an eight foot putt will probably haunt Tom for awhile.

Tomorrow i am going to see Paul McCartney at Citi Field!! The best thing to happen at Citi Field since it opened. heh! ( sorry METs fans!)

Anyway, it is suppose to be monsoon like weather, so that will be neat!

I need to get out my rain gear. Yeah that's right, i will be HOT! lol

BUT i get to see MACCA live!

I promise to report on the concert later this week.

and maybe the Yankees will be in first place by the end of the week!

and oh yes.. i still have long hair.

but no shrubbery...

and i must cut down the mightiest tree in the forest with a ... herring!

Ni Ni Ni!!!!

my apologies to Monty Python...

HR derby... hair part deux..and spelling

this is my favorite part of the all-star weekend.

i know that the game itself is important as it decides who has home field in the world series...

but

the HR derby is fun!

i always root for the long shot..

it is fun watching the other players just having fun..

i know that professional sports has become a business..

but i wish it was more fun..

so tonight i will watch and enjoy!

go brandon inge :-) as of this writing, he is the longest of the long shots!

and for those of you waiting for an update on my hair dilemma..

none of the wig places will take my hair...

but i thought i might just cut it anyway..

so i looked at a bunch of women of a certain age ( mine!) at a concert .. and those with short hair all looked frumpy .. now let me just say here.. that i have a ton of friends that have shorter hair and do NOT look frumpy!

anyway.. for the time being, i will keep my hippie hair, as my friend John calls it.

Of course, that might change tomorrow...

you will just need to come back and keep updated!!

ps.. i always spellcheck my posts, because i am a notoriously bad speller... and i am pleased to announce that i only spelled three words wrong! Woot!

pps.. no, i know, my grammar is atrocious.

John "J.J." Jones.. 1970's Jets QB.. and other NFL Veterans..

J.J. Jones was a QB for the New York Jets. He was Joe Namath's back-up during the 1970's. He was one of the first African-American QB's in the NFL.

He died in a fire yesterday. He was renting a basement apartment of a house. The fire was most likely an arson.

I tried to look for something about his death on ESPN, but found nothing. That surprised me considering his place in NFL history. I just think this is part of a bigger issue.

We need to honor and take care of our NFL Veterans. Once they are out of the league, they are forgotten, and left to suffer the leftover physical pain of their NFL years. They have little health insurance, and end up, at times, living without the help they need to deal with the ongoing effects of the injuries they suffered.

We need to make sure the young players coming into the league know the history of the game.. they need to know about the players who blazed the trail.. whether it was for racial equality, or for financial security.. or if it was just a player who was a journeyman player, but was an integral part of the team.. Because football is a team effort. There is no one player or coach who could win a game by himself.

My thoughts go out to JJ's friends and family.

I belong to a Jets online community and below is a note that JJ Jones posted on the forum (Jetnation.com) in March, 2008. Some very interesting stuff.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Answer to "Where Is J. J. Jones Now?"

Thank you JetNation.com for the interest that has been taken to find out what happened to John "J.J." Jones. I am alive and well and still involved in minority business and community development activities around the world, as you can see from the news and information attachments below found at my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee’s The Mid South Tribune Newspaper’s web site www.blackinformationhighway.com.

As far as my football career is concerned, I forfeited it when I shared with the New York media and the whole world the private words told me by new Head Coach Lou Holtz that He had never had a Black Quarterback play for him that and he never would. I left New York City headed for the Calgary Stampeders Canadian Football League Team to replace their Quarterback Joe Pisarchek just one week before General Manager Andy Robistelli of the New York Giants called for me to come play Quarterback for him with the Giants. So, you know the infamous history of that story of Joe "P" and the Philadelphia Eagles’ last play of the game fumble return for a touchdown that took Joe "P" to Philly.

In any case, my sports career reward can be summed up in a statement made by National Football League Hall of Fame Quarterback Warren Moon when he gave credit to former Los Angeles Rams Quarterback "James Harris" and a "couple of others" for his being able to play Quarterback in the NFL. I met Warren Moon when he visited Mount Zion my church home in Seattle and I told him I was one of those "couple of others!" The other Black Quarterback pioneer in the National Football League was the Late "Jefferson Street" Joe Gilliam from Tennessee State University, which by the way was one of only three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football teams in 1973 that was undefeated and untied. I was Quarterback for the 1973 undefeated untied Fisk University Bulldogs located on that same "Jefferson Street" in Nashville, Tennessee.

I gave up my professional football career in the National Football League so that other African American Quarterback/Athletes that followed me from the likes of Doug Williams, Randle Cunningham, Rodney Peete to Vince Young and even Mike Vick could a real chance to play QB in the NFL like, the only man to win championships in the old American Football League and the National Football League, Weeb Ewbanks gave me with the New York Jets. Weeb was like a father, who in-fact died just two days after my Father Negro National Baseball League Memphis Red Sox Catcher Clinton "Casey" Jones.

hair..

so i have very long hair... longer then it has ever been..

i was going to cut it years ago for locks of love, but alas they wont take highlighted hair...

since then i haven't cut it more then trims every couple of months.

I haven't highlighted it for 6 months but the highlights still exist ...

so ...

i am looking for a place to donate my hair, and the only place i found was a place that would take my hair and turn it into a big dreadlock mat to use for oil spills.. which is a very good cause but not exactly what i was looking for...

then of course i would need to find a haircut that doesn't make me look frumpy...

but as my daughter said..

you don't want to look 15 either..

help!

Serena, Roger, Tiger, Lana Turner, and of course Love SHACK...

so i started this post a couple of days ago...

i should make up a story on how i was too busy being discovered at the soda shop, a la Lana Turner, but alas there is not a soda shop close by and frankly i don't think they are looking for a 40+ mom with no experience other then some college theater courses and a pipe dream...

by the way, what is a "pipe dream" and do people really dream about pipes and how is that exciting? maybe if they are made from copper, but otherwise i just don't see it..

ok off to this past weekend's non team sports...

congrats to roger and serena for their Wimbledon wins! and tiger winning his own tournament! (hmmm.. ) i love tiger, but not much of a surprise. How can he not win his own tourney? It would be like having someone else blow out the candles when it is your birthday!

on a more somber note...so sad about steve mcnair.. only the second black QB to have started in the superbowl. I am very sad for his four boys. I hope they somehow find peace as they grow older, and remember the good memories, as opposed to the tragic way he died.

now for something completely different ( to borrow a phrase) ..

why do i always want to dance when i hear love shack?

MO, 500 saves and an RBI!

yeah .. i know this is a couple of days late..

BUT

special cheers to Mariano Rivera, the GREATEST reliever ever! and should be in the discussion for the top pitchers ever.

AND how cool is it that he got his 500th save on the same night he got his 1st RBI...

amazing!

When asked about the record of 571 saves, Mo said, it isn't about the records, it is about winning the next game. He is a class act and a team player!

Thank you Mariano! I am so glad you are a Yankee!

Happy July everyone!
